Home alone...

I've got customer's audit these two weeks, so I have been busy since the first day (last Monday) I joined back my ex-company.  Today it has finally ended.  Basically customers are all happy, which is good.

Just now, I rushed to attend my CFP class after work.  I have missed so many classes lately.  I think if I miss classes again, my attendance will be too low to allow me to sit for the exam next month.  So I'd better catch up, no matter how tight my schedule is.

Came back home at 9 p.m., took my shower, cooked simple dinner... now I'm home alone, listening to Jack Johnson's CD, drinking my favorite Japanese green tea, watching the rain outside, unwinding and trying to find a moment of peace.... moment like this has become very precious to me lately... since the day my Dad passed away, things have been moving in a fast-forward pace.  Basically I have flew around 14 times in the past 2 months... I'm both physically and mentally tired.  I think I need to sleep for one full day.

Finally, a moment alone...

It has been one month since Dad passed away.

The whole of October has been a busy and drastic month to me:

6th Oct - Dad passed away
16th-26th Oct - I went to China (as Dad wished, I 'brought' him to the Expo)
28th-30th Oct - Back to Sibu to discuss with family on Dad's tomb design and his other matters
1st Nov - Back to my ex-company and started working (as Dad wished)
3rd-7th Nov - Mum and bro were in town

Now finally, I get some time to settle down, sitting in front of my computer, looking back at what happened, working on what still need to be done, and thinking of what to do next.

From time to time, dad will appear in my mind, my heart will start to hurt again, eyes become wet, nose turns red.  I know time will heal this deep deep hole in my heart.  For the time being, I just wanna keep myself extremely busy and occupied, so that I don't get too much time missing him...

...BUT I REALLY MISS HIM SO SO MUCH................

God, why do you have to take him away from me and my family???... You should know how important he is to me in this world.....................

Being opinionate and judgmental

I have come across some very opinionate and judgmental persons.  They tend to stress me up.  I used to be very opinionate and judgmental too.  However as I age, I found that things always have many sides, it depends on which side we view things from.  There is often no strict right or wrong to a lot of things.  Therefore there is no point  for one to argue or defend his/her opinion and view point too passionately.  All it takes is a more forgiving heart to tolerate differences.

Emotion

God created each one of us differently by giving us different level of emotion.  Some people were borned very emotional while some were borned cool and easy going.

Being emotional is not necessarily bad.  It's important for some of the professions such as artist, actors, musicians, designers, writers to have strong emotion and passion.

However being too emotional can be sometimes quite disastrous to the people around, especially when the person loves to express his/her negative emotion by throwing bad temper, saying words that hurt, showing jealousy, being sacarstic, being self-centered and impulsive, keep nagging, keep complaining etc.

Nowadays I come to appreciate people with cool emotion, as I can sometimes be easily affected by emotional people.  I learn to stay away from people that are negative and emotional.  These people are sometimes very poisonous and inconstructive.

On the other hand, I really appreciate people like my housemate Pig Pig, who is a super cool person that always come home everyday without showing much strong emotion, despite the stress from work.  To her, everyday seems to be a good day, no matter what happened.  Sometimes, I think it's a true blessing that God has given her such a kind heart and cool character.

The more I dealt with emotional people nowadays, the more I appreciate peaceful and happy person.

Retirement

My dad and I talked about blogging tonight.  I asked him to start writing and faxing to me so that I can help him set up a blog and post articles on daily basis.  I do this out of the intention to keep him busy, as he seems so bored with his retirement life.

I wonder what I'll be doing during my retirement years... mostly likely I'll be traveling around with my retired friends, playing mahjong, reading & writing, chatting online, monitoring stock market...

Hmm... seems like I'm actually living it now.

You are what you think

One thing I learned this year 'You are what you think'.  When our mind decides to do something, our body will act upon it, sometimes even unconsciously or subconsciously.  Therefore if we wish to achieve something, it is important to sit down and set the goals and plans clearly.  You would be surprised how easy your wish can come true sometimes.  This is because you have 'pre-conditioned'/'pre-programmed' your mind to achieve it.

A lot of time, we are standing at a cross-road, not knowing what we want and where we are going next.  Take time off to think carefully, read books to seek for inspiration, pray for direction, pay attention to things happened around us, observe and think more.  Eventually at one point, we will find the answers.

So, do not just wake up and live another day without giving much thought to what difference you can make to the people and the world around you.  In fact, everyone has the power to make a difference, if you want to.

Yesterday I saw these two interesting bookmarks on my coffee table.  The messages say:

"Make a difference: Go out into the world UNCORRUPTED, a breath of FRESH AIR in this squlid and polluted society.  Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the LIVING GOD.  Carry the light-giving message into the night.  - Philippians 2:14-16".

"Discover your life's purpose: Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that... Each of you must take responsibility for doing the CREATIVE BEST you can with your own life. - Galatians 6:4-5".

It makes me think. I like it and think it's inspiring.

Timing vs Opportunity

I read a book called 'Outliers' recently.  It talks about timing and opportunity.

From there I realized, we are who we are primarily because of the year (generation) we were born.  My grandparent's generation is more unlucky, as they were borned in China in early 1900s, and they were forced to go through WWI and WWII, moving around and living in poverty.  So majority of that generation lived in poverty and instability, regardless if they worked hard or not.  That's why many of them came to South East Asia, trying to look for better opportunity to survive, and there my parent's generation were born.

Our parents were born in the generation (those born in 1930s-1940s and reached their adulthood in 1950s-1960s) that if they work hard, they will survive better than others.  That explains why there are so many successful self-grown entrepreneurs in that generation.  The community at that time was still not as competitive, so long as one is hard working and frugal, after years of working, he should have some capital and knowledge to start his own business in the small town, with very little competition.  Of course, if one happened to be in a bigger town, then the chance of him become wealthier than those living in a small town after 10-20 years, is much higher.  The success of this generation is mainly owing to the fact that the world after WWII has growing population and demand for goods, hence many basic businesses were in demand.

Of course, if a person holds a tertiary qualification at that time (1950s-1960s), it's almost guaranteed that he/she will be groomed into a leader in government sector or in the corporate world because most people only have high school qualification.  College graduates were rare in that generation, which means they were not necessarily smarter or more hard working than others, they just have a better opportunity than others, owing to their family financial status plus more importantly, the timing they were borned.  If they were born 10-20 years later, they would most likely lose all their advantages, even if they were from wealthier family.

So what are the advantages of those being born in 1970s, i.e. people like us??  Oh well, think carefully. We were among the first generation to have computer at home during our high school age.  Then we were the first generation having internet when we just came out from college.  (Internet only became commercialized after 1990 and growed explosively in 1996-1997.)  So what does this fact make us??  It makes most of us professionals.  Due to the change from Industrial to Information Age, there were high demand for profession such as engineers, IT experts, corporate managers etc.  Hence, these professions tend to have better job opportunity and better income.  That also in a way explains why there are less among us that become an entrepreneur.

So what are the advantages of those being born in 1980s-1990s?  In my opinion, the world has moved from localization to globalization in recent years, which means there are higher demand for internet business.  Therefore many who studied window programming or php language etc in college, have the advantage to start up as online entrepreneurs and be the masters in the cyber world.  We were born earlier, where the programming languages we were taught in school were mostly out-dated.  Unless we took initiative to re-learn the latest IT knowledge again, we do not own any advantage in this current high demand area.

There you see, isn't the timing in which we were born important in determining who we become?  Some generations are particularly unfortunate, while some generations are just super lucky.  Of course, besides timing, how successful we become in our field also depends on the location we are at, our IQ+EQ+attitude.  It's what chinese called '天时,地利,人和' (timing, location, human factors).

Anyway, I consider our generation the luckier one.  What do you think??

A good one...

Bye Bye my Brazil & Argentina!

I watched FIFA World Cup since it began last month.  My support goes to Brazil and Argentina.  I just love the spirit and the skill of these two South American teams.

Last weekend, I almost cried watching the game between Brazil vs. Netherland.  All I can say is I hate the way Netherland played.  On the other hand, I was speechless when Brazil's Felipe Melo scored an own goal in the 53rd minute and got himself sent off 20 minutes later for a stamp on Dutch winger Arjen Robben.  Well he may have made serious mistakes in this important game but I was actually happy that he stamped Arjen Robben hard for play-acting.

There were just too many simulations and physical attacks from the Netherland team, which the referee just somehow kept one eye closed.  I was angry watching it, so as Brazil team, and Robinho was so mad at the way Netherland team played till he shouted fiercely at them many times.  I was so sad seeing Kaka cried after losing the game.  Basically I just sat there speechless for 1 hour+.  Anyway, I think whichever team wearing dark blue shirts will sure lose the game.  Brazil is supposed to wear their famous yellow that day, not dark blue.

Then I watched the next game between Uruguay and Ghana.  I supported Ghana as they were the only African team left.  In the quarter final tie against Uruguay, Ghana's Asamoah Gyan missed a penalty in the last minute of extra time hitting the crossbar. He converted his penalty in the subsequent penalty shootout, but Uruguay went on to win the shootout 4-2.  There, I went speechless again.

Before watching the following game of my last favorite team Argentina against Germany, I prayed hard that Argentina will win the game and go on to win the World Cup.  Who knows... they scored a big fat zero and ended with a shocking 4-0 defeat against Germany.

Oh well, after watching almost 60 world cup games since last month, my conclusion is.... the problem is probably, ME.

Basically whichever teams that I supported sure ended up losing the game, including my favorite Brazil and Argentina.  I joked about this with Pig Pig and guess what, she shared the same feelings as me that whichever teams that she supported also lost the games eventually.

Now, it seems that Germany and Netherland are likely to make it to the Final.  Since I hate Netherland team so much, I choose to support Germany.  If Germany too lose the game, then I shall conclude without any doubt that it's ME, who brought bad luck to all the losing teams, nothing to do with the dark blue shirts, and I shall not watch FIFA World Cup 2014 for my favorite teams sake.

Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance...

I am not an outlier

Months ago, I quit my job for freedom, i.e. flexible working hour.

Weeks ago, I was prompted to write down my life purpose on a card during a workshop, which I wrote "To make a difference in my life, and in other's life".

So I want freedom and want to make a difference.

Yesterday I read a magazine and saw a survey about 'What tomorrow's Malaysian workers want'.  Guess what??

Survey A:
31% - Flexible working arrangements
26% - Performance-based cash bonuses
15% - Paid academic training & development
12% - Exposure to advanced social activities
8% - A good company pension plan
8% - Paid time off to do charity work

Survey B:
43% - The knowledge that I am making a difference in the world
29% - Quality relationships
28% - As high a profile as possible - as quickly as possible

I smiled while reading it, thinking to myself that I am not really an outlier after all.  I am just may be more daring than others in taking action to pursue what most of us wish for.

老伴

This one is good too:

I read this today, I like it:

The Five Love Languages

I just read a book - 'The Five Love Languages' by Gary Chapman. It talks about five specific languages of love:

1. Words of affirmation. People who love Words of Affirmation love to hear encouraging words and verbal compliments.

2. Quality Time. People who prefer Quality Time appreciate others who spend time with them, pay attention to them and do things together with them.

3. Gift. Some people love to accept gift such as flowers, little notes, surprises etc., including the presence of their spouse when they need it the most.

4. Acts of Service. People who enjoy Acts of Service appreciate others for helping them with works, e.g. house works, gardening, laundry etc.

5. Physical Touch. Some people enjoy physical touch, hugs, kisses etc.

Each of us has our preferred love language. What speaks volumes to you may be meaningless to your spouse.

Most couples get married at the 'Falling in love' stage. At its peak, the 'in love' experience is euphoric. The couple are emotionally obsessed with each other. Unfortunately this 'in love' stage usually will not last forever. After the 'in love' obsession has died and the couple have returned to the real world, this is when they start to see each other's 'problems'.

For example, a husband who needs Words of Affirmation and his wife who likes Quality Time. If the husband never pay attention and spend quality time with his wife, his wife will start to complain about him and never give him any words of affirmation, just keep complaining everyday. Soon both their love tank will be empty and they will be sick of each other. The meaning of Quality Time here does not mean that the husband sits next to his wife but is reading newspapar constantly when his wife is talking to him about something. It means paying attention and respect to the person who is talking. Otherwise it's meaningless even if he claims that he does spend time with his wife.

If a person's love language is not being understood by his/her spouse, his/her love tank will gradually turn low and eventually become empty. From there, he/she may start to turn away and stop speaking his/her spouse's love language, and the spouse's love tank will soon become empty too. On the other hand, if they are able to understand each other's love language and are willing to show it continuously to each other, both their love tank will always be full and they will stay happily together.

Some will say they hate to deliver their spouse's love language, for example Act of Service or Physical Touch, as to them, it doesn't come naturally. Well, love is a choice. We are simply choosing to do it for his/her benefit, not our own. We want to meet our spouse's emotional need. In so doing, his emotional love tank is filled and chances are he will reciprocate and speak our language. When he does, our emotions return, and our love tank begins to fill.

The above mentioned five love languages also apply to parent-child and to friendship. Basically it means we usually get along better with those who can understand and is willing to fulfill our love language's need, and we hate and stay away from those who just never understand it.

So what is your love language??

Keep up with the modern world

Last week I received many b'day messages on my Facebook's Wall.  I was a bit uncomfortable with it so I had a chit chat with my old girlfriends from high school about it.  Below is the conversation:

Jo: "Facebook is scary, it's like a broadcasting channel, 'fang ge pi' everyone knows... please try to avoid FB for communication."

Rita: "This is exactly how i feel about FB!!! Why does everyone's wall need to show what i say on other people's wall to be honest? It's kinda silly if you ask me."

Jo: "Can someone educate me how it works?"

Ying: "Go to privacy setting... for b'day, under your privacy setting -> profile info -> b'day, you can set "only friends" + except limited profile ... "  (followed by a list of complicated instructions to set other privacy settings)

Duck:"You see, it is easy for an evil person to gather info about you... your birthday, your mum's name, the name of your beloved deceased pet... then the next thing, they can hack into your other private account.  I mean you can argue that we are such small fries, who wants to hack into our accounts, but i just don't feel safe."

After reading all these feedbacks from my girl friends, I was thinking to myself... our parent's generation slowly lost touch to what we do nowadays and to the modern gadgets because they seldom follow up with the change and the new ideas.  Imagine if we also stop follow up from now on, 10 years later we may not be able to even switch on the latest model of TV, computer (if they still exist and have not been replaced by something else), dial numbers on the latest 'z-Phone' etc.

Recently a friend of mine installed Window 7 on her new laptop.  She complained to me that it was simply very difficult to use, as compared to XP, due to the rearrangement of many tabs, buttons, drop down menus etc.  She basically found it hard to adapt to the new concept till she almost gave up and wanted to switch back to XP.  Then I advised her to keep Window 7 and learn, at least someone can keep up with the latest OS, so that next time she can teach me about it... haha

I am still using Window XP and have no intention to switch to the latest OS.  However if I don't learn about Window 7, then comes Window 8 or Window 9, if by that time time I have no choice but to switch due to the incompatibilities of XP to all the latest fancy applications... I can't imagine how lose touch I will be by then.

So my friends, no matter how busy you are with your life, taking care of your husband and kids, I advise you to always keep a young heart and have the curiousity to spend some time to keep up with the modern gadgets.

Some $ tips...

Stock market is crazy nowadays.  It's so full of manipulations from the government, big companies etc.  The market has been quite bullish lately.  Just 1-2 weeks ago Bloomberg reported that based on all the economy indicators, U.S. economy has shown strong sign of recovery.  Then the market turned even more bullish.  After few days, it plunged because of one or two bad news.  Then Bloomberg started to question the analysts if double dip is coming...

Only those government, big banks and corps waiting to announce financial report, can predict the market.  Most of the others will only get the 2nd hand news and by the time the news reach the public, another hidden news is waiting to be announced.

So I totally agree with George Soros, the stock market is full of human manipulations and human emotion that reacts to it.  The conclusion is, if you are not an expert, don't try to trade stocks.  It is better to buy funds and let the fund managers worry about it.  What you need to do is to switch the fund from time to time to lock in your profit when the market is high.

In the mood for...

I found that there are few modes that I can switch to:

1) In normal day, I'm in my 'down-to-earth' mode where my eyes see very 'real' things, and my ears hear noices like cars, construction etc.

2) However some days, when my mood is artistic, my eyes will see an artistic world, where even my plants can look so artistic, and my ears will either hear a quiet world or beautiful music.  That's the time I feel really fresh, energetic and creative.  Sometimes I wish everyday I wake up in this mode, where the world just seems so beautiful and lovely.  I would grab my DSLR and go out shooting.

3) Some days, my minimalist nature will call, my mind will demand to see a very clean and simple environment, any mess will make me stressed.  That's the time to do clean up.

4) Some days, my super highly effective nature will call. I'll suddenly feel the urge to do one thousand things in the fastest way.  There goes a to-do-list and I am in action.

5) Some days, I am in my planning mode.  I will grab paper and pen, or just sit in front of my computer to plan this and that, and reorganize things.  That's the time that I feel secure and clear that things are in control.

6) Some days, I am in my learning mode.  I will read and read and read non-stop, and make notes on things I learn.

7) Some days, I will be in philosophical mode, where I start to think 'What's the point?', 'What next?', 'Why, what, when, where and how?'... and I will start to ask my friends about their life goals.  Sometimes, these questions and the answers make me ponder and puzzle... so far I have not heard of a very exciting answer though...

Just curious, what modes do you have??  Are we seeing the same world, thinking similar things, feeling similar way most of the time, or are we all different and having totally different modes??

To be or not to be...

So how has my life been since I quit my job end of last year??  Well, I'm basically stress-free, hassle-free, having all the time to myself, so I have nothing to complain really.

I have been learning a lot of new things, mainly related to financial and investment.  There are hardly days that I laze around doing nothing, have been just doing this and that non-stop everyday.  Guess I am just not the type that can enjoy the rich 'tai tai's' life even if I really become rich.  Sometimes I even think it's a waste of time that I'm not doing problem solving nor making decisions on this and that like before.  My kepo-chi nature is calling...  Guess I'm just like my dad, he told me he can't stand retirement life, feel useless if he is not exercising his brain or making business decisions... haha.

So may be it's time I end my long vacation and get going again??... hmm....

Anego forever...

Somehow after I quit my job, I still get calls and emails from time to time from my ex-colleagues, asking me for work related advice.

I got a call during CNY from my ex-subordinate who went to work in Singapore 2-3 years ago.  He knew from others that I have quit my job but then he still thought of getting advice from me on his future career options.  He told me that he is thinking of either changing the section, or moving to another company of the same industry, or switching to work for the customer.  I asked him what his priorities of life are now - $$, career, family, time, freedom??  I knew he left my ex-company with the aim to earn and save more $$, so he chose to go to Singapore.  So I asked if he has got any promotion or increment, and what he is not happy about his current position.  He said his job has been very stressful and living in Singapore is quite hectic.  He has got married 1-2 year ago, his wife is with him in Singapore, but he has no time for her.  So based on his feedback, I gave him some advice and options to think about which he was quite happy about.

Another day, I received a phone call from my ex-boss who has also left the company and moved back to KL.  He seems to be not doing very well recently, so he called me to chat and to seek for advice too.  So I also apply the 5D problem solving methodology, i.e. Gather data to establish the problem statement, analyzing the root cause, think of the corrective and preventive action etc.

(By the way, I have just learned from financial planning a similar flow which goes this way: Data gathering -> Analyze data to determine strategy -> Work out the best strategies to meet needs -> Prepare plan -> Implement the plan -> Review and improve on the plan).

Today I received an email from another angmo ex-colleague from the U.S..  She has just got promoted to become a section manager.  Well, she used to seek for my advice quite often on work related items.  She told me she miss me a lot after I left.  Then in her email, she told me that the global team is lack of efficiency nowadays etc.  So I wrote her an email analyzing the issues she mentioned and suggesting some ways to improve it.

After replying her email, I thought to myself... how come I am still living my life as an 'Anego' busy solving other's issue, even after I quit my job??...  I think most of these people think I won't mind helping them.  Well in fact, I really don't mind, I actually kind of enjoying my role as an 'Anego'.

Guess I will continue to be an 'Anego' forever.

Learnings...

I'm deeply sorry, I almost forgot I have a blog to update... haha.

Some learnings to share:
1. Financial planning (which involves risk management, taxation, investment, retirement planning, estate planning) is something that I didn't have time to explore in details all these years but I find it a very interesting topic to learn.

2. Cold calling is extremely challenging, where the biggest barrier comes from oneself.  Many successful business depends on cold calling to create leads.  We should pay respect to good sales persons for their courage, knowledge and skill in interacting with strangers.  Next area I want to challenge myself would be sales and marketing!

3. Nowadays, knowledge is power!!

4. One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus and concentrate our power.  Most people dabble their way thru life, never deciding to master anything in particular.

5. Not many businesses are really very successful, a lot of them are just sustaining.  What makes a difference is how one can differentiate its business from other competitions, i.e. to possess its unique competitive advantage.

6. To do everything by oneself is not considered as owning a business but as being self employed.

7. Health is important.  Yoga is good for health and mental.

8. Five important things to practise everyday: 1) Good diet 2) Good sleep 3) Breath slowly 4) Exercise 5) Positive thinking.

Happy living!!

It's 2010!!

Remember the time when everyone was worried about Y2K problem?  Well, it has been 10 years since then.

We have lived in the new millenium for 10 years now.  What have you done in this 10 years??  Mind to let me know??

I have grown from a little girl newly graduated from the university to this me now, with a little bit more wisdom, and a lot less passion.  Sad in a way but glad that I'm no longer that little naive girl, actually I'm quite happy to be the me now.

Well do share with me what you think about 2010.  Happy New Year!!
