Anego forever...

Somehow after I quit my job, I still get calls and emails from time to time from my ex-colleagues, asking me for work related advice.

I got a call during CNY from my ex-subordinate who went to work in Singapore 2-3 years ago.  He knew from others that I have quit my job but then he still thought of getting advice from me on his future career options.  He told me that he is thinking of either changing the section, or moving to another company of the same industry, or switching to work for the customer.  I asked him what his priorities of life are now - $$, career, family, time, freedom??  I knew he left my ex-company with the aim to earn and save more $$, so he chose to go to Singapore.  So I asked if he has got any promotion or increment, and what he is not happy about his current position.  He said his job has been very stressful and living in Singapore is quite hectic.  He has got married 1-2 year ago, his wife is with him in Singapore, but he has no time for her.  So based on his feedback, I gave him some advice and options to think about which he was quite happy about.

Another day, I received a phone call from my ex-boss who has also left the company and moved back to KL.  He seems to be not doing very well recently, so he called me to chat and to seek for advice too.  So I also apply the 5D problem solving methodology, i.e. Gather data to establish the problem statement, analyzing the root cause, think of the corrective and preventive action etc.

(By the way, I have just learned from financial planning a similar flow which goes this way: Data gathering -> Analyze data to determine strategy -> Work out the best strategies to meet needs -> Prepare plan -> Implement the plan -> Review and improve on the plan).

Today I received an email from another angmo ex-colleague from the U.S..  She has just got promoted to become a section manager.  Well, she used to seek for my advice quite often on work related items.  She told me she miss me a lot after I left.  Then in her email, she told me that the global team is lack of efficiency nowadays etc.  So I wrote her an email analyzing the issues she mentioned and suggesting some ways to improve it.

After replying her email, I thought to myself... how come I am still living my life as an 'Anego' busy solving other's issue, even after I quit my job??...  I think most of these people think I won't mind helping them.  Well in fact, I really don't mind, I actually kind of enjoying my role as an 'Anego'.

Guess I will continue to be an 'Anego' forever.

中女 vs. 中年发痒男'

Recently Pig Pig forwarded me a youtube clip on a documentary about 30-49 year old single women.  It contains interviews on single women (including divorcee) in HK.  There is a term for these women, called '中女' in cantonese.

According to the documentary, nowadays 1 out of 4 women in China and Hong Kong aged between 30-49 is single.  Somehow these women are perceived as the 'left over' group by Hong Kong society, no matter how successful they are in their career or other aspects of their life.

The fact is from the interviews, most of these girls had been in relationship(s) before, just that it didn't work out, mostly due to the betrayal of their boy friend or husband.  Now they have left the past behind and a lot of them are doing very well in their career.

It sounds very interesting and amusing to me.  Why do victims of partner's betrayal also have to carry such a bad name as the 'left over' group?  Just because they chose to stay away from trouble??  On the other hand, is it really that blessed to be married, especially in this modern world where sex scandals, love affair & cheating on partner etc are so common everywhere??  (Btw, I just read about Sandra Bullock's husband's case this morning).

Then I guess it is only fair to have another term called '中年发痒男' (middle age itchy men) since they are everywhere nowadays.  It would be interesting to watch the interviews on these men (e.g. Jack Neo, his wife is even more pityful) to see just what they are thinking...

Then tell me, who is the real problem...

Learnings...

I'm deeply sorry, I almost forgot I have a blog to update... haha.

Some learnings to share:
1. Financial planning (which involves risk management, taxation, investment, retirement planning, estate planning) is something that I didn't have time to explore in details all these years but I find it a very interesting topic to learn.

2. Cold calling is extremely challenging, where the biggest barrier comes from oneself.  Many successful business depends on cold calling to create leads.  We should pay respect to good sales persons for their courage, knowledge and skill in interacting with strangers.  Next area I want to challenge myself would be sales and marketing!

3. Nowadays, knowledge is power!!

4. One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus and concentrate our power.  Most people dabble their way thru life, never deciding to master anything in particular.

5. Not many businesses are really very successful, a lot of them are just sustaining.  What makes a difference is how one can differentiate its business from other competitions, i.e. to possess its unique competitive advantage.

6. To do everything by oneself is not considered as owning a business but as being self employed.

7. Health is important.  Yoga is good for health and mental.

8. Five important things to practise everyday: 1) Good diet 2) Good sleep 3) Breath slowly 4) Exercise 5) Positive thinking.

Happy living!!
